How to get jewelry out of a drain

You are doing the dishes after a family meal and before you even finish, your prized piece of jewelry (a ring, bracelet, earring) slips off from you. Before you even have the time to catch it, it goes down the kitchen sink.

What should you do?

If you want to know how to get jewelry out of a drain, here are the steps that you need to follow.

Keep the area off limits

Tell the members of the household to avoid using the sink until the item has been retrieved. Otherwise, it will become increasingly difficult to get the jewelry back.

Turn off the garbage disposal and water

If water keeps on flowing down the drain, the jewelry might be pushed down further until it reaches the sewer line. When that happens, the chance of getting the item back becomes slim.

Stopping the flow of water increases the likelihood that the item goes to a more accessible area of the kitchen plumbing system, like the P-trap.

Find a magnet

Find a strong magnet and attach it to a string. After that, lower the magnet down the drain. There’s a good chance that you can get your jewelry back with this nifty trick.

Check the P-trap

If you can’t retrieve your jewelry with a magnet tied to a string, the next best thing to do is to check if the item is sitting inside the P-trap.

Troubleshooting Common Garbage Disposal Issues

What is a garbage disposal?

  • Hopper Chambers – There are two parts: the upper chamber for storing food waste straight from the sink, and the lower chamber for collecting shredded and pulverized garbage.

  • Waste Line Connector – This is where the processed garbage passes through when flushed down the sewer or septic system.

When you are well-informed about the different parts and functions of your unit, you’ll generally know how to troubleshoot simple and common garbage disposal issues such as overheating, clogging or jamming, and having no power at all.

It is also recommended that you become aware of the warning signals that your disposal is unable to function properly. Signs include a foul odor, leaks, and a strange noise coming from the unit.

New Efficiency Standards for Residential Water Heaters

As of April 16th, 2015 the U.S. Department of Energy requires higher energy factor ratings on almost all residential water heating products. These include water heaters gas fired, oil fired, electric, tabletop, instantaneous gas fired, and instantaneous electric heaters.

The largest noticeable changes are made in tanks with larger capacities and high-efficiency condensing gas water heaters. Several of the issues that arise with this new mandate are the size of the tanks in smaller homes, the requirement for more insulation for piping and fittings, and these heaters can be significantly heavier than standard models. Potentially, oil-fired products may need extra insulation, flue dampers, or even new combustion systems. Gas-fired models might need a new venting system or draining system for condensate. And for those with Electronic cycling, the EF (energy efficient) models could potentially create more noise than standard models.
